you could plug a line into an extra jack in his house
and then run it across the alley into your house....

shit, well then the only way would be to try splicing
a line onto their cable line but you might get fried doing
that shit...and i doubt it would stand up to the elements
even if you wrapped it up real tight with duct tape. |

There are two ways that I know of...
1)
You buy a router (I suggest Linksys brand), and you connect his cable modem to your router, and then run CAT5 cables from the router to his and yours PC. Est. Cost: Router = $80, NIC card for you = $20, cables = $20
2)
Your buddy adds a 2nd NIC card to his computer, and he turns on internet sharing (a Windows feature), you run CAT5 cable from his 2nd card to your PC. Est. Cost: 2 NIC cards = $40, cables = $20
Method 2 is cheaper, but method 1 will allow more than 2 PC's (depending on the router you get) |

| the router is what im talkin about, just go pick one up, of course i believe youll have to buy your own modem though, if you buddy works for the cable company he can probably pick a used one up cheap as fuck |
