i know zildjian (however its spelled) are very good, but pretty weak so if you're a hard hitter, i wouldnt invest in those...thats all i know though, i play guitar so my drum knowledge is little to none

Ive heard good things about the sabian B8, but what ever you do dont get the Zildjian "ZXT" set or whatever the fuck that is, because the high hat sounds like fart.

You should go to a music store and just listen to everything, and get what sounds good. You can even make a mixed cd with drums that you think sound good an get something close.

take the cheapest because no one never cares for the drummer, buy a new amp to your guitarist with the rest of your money.

ive got these zildjian z custom 'rock' series that arent too bad. they have a good sound and since they are supposed to be 'rock' they are a lil thicker than normal so they last a lil longer. but cymbals thick or thin, cheap or not eventually crack. i would suggest whatever you choose get a warranty if you can. for the next year or so anytime my cymbals break i take em back to guitar center where i bought them and get a new pair with no charge.

my first were B8's, and compared to nething that ziljian or paiste put out as starter cymbals, they are great. there sound is a lot better than ZBT's or 302's. If you plan on ever recording with the cymbals you're gonna get or even playing live take a look at Zildjian A's (not A Custom they are more expensive). they are amazing cymabls and still a bit cheaper than other brands, in fact a lot of pro drummers use A's, and if u have the money spring for A Customs (they are the ones w/brilliant finish) or even K's or K customs. Sabians are good as well, but as far as beginner kits go you cant go wrong with the B8's. oh, and as long as you're not getting fast crash's or thin/paper thing crashs you should be ok. my crahs are medium-thin, my hi hats are meduim bottom and med-thin top, and my ride is medium heavy. i dont think ur playing jazz so stay away from thin cymbals. anything "rock" or whatever is usually a pretty heavy/thicker cymbal and unless you hit them hard you wont get the sound they are meant to produce.

I play with a Sabian B8 set... I love the sound. Specially the high-hats, i'd go with those: a 14' crash 18' crash and high-hats. As for the ride i dunno, i use a Zildjian ride because i got it for free.

Sabian and zildjian suck ass. Be a man and get some Paistes. I'm not sure what that has to do with being a man, but paistes are better sounding. They're a little expensive, but if you get the dimensions they're not as pricey as the signatures and they sound amazing. Sabian B8's? God, what are you filling this kids head full of? Shit? Say yes. There you go...
