I've been playing guitar for ever and drums would be a cool new thing. Im thinking of a Tama "rockstar" set with new skins, a Ziljackoffian medium-ride, crash, hi-hat cymbal package, and an Iron cobra double bass etc.(Good set, with everything that is needed to start playin) I predicked it wont take me long to start learning shit and play all kinds of gnarly cock rock beats.
But,
if I get this new amp I can start playing in bands like the fucking same day because its a really good amp (good as it gets, loud as fuck, an sounds perfect ect.). Its the same amp that both the goons in guttermouth use. Ive played guitar for ever and its what I know best.
What should I get for X-mas? |

I play death metal AND fast punk on guitar, you dont see people like that everyday.
The crazy thing about drums is that 2 people I know just got new drumset for X-mas so far. Everyones drumming. And I know I'd be good at it. I've wanted to get a set for a longtime.
But I've also wanted to get a really good amp so I can start playing shows and stuff. |

I already have an alright amp, but the difference between an alright amp and a good amp is pretty big. Either it is loud enough and sounds good, or its loud enough and sounds not so good.
Im a "has to have the best or nothing" kind of person, so I dont think I would be happy having something thats kind of half ass.
The amp and drumset cost about the same, drumset maybe a little more, but just a little. Both are over a grand and under a grand and a half. |

russoloco,
Hey, Im also a guitar nerd, I have a Gibson LP studio, Marshal AVT 4x12, and a crate vintage club 120watt tube head, I use a boss ds-1 for the distortion because the distortion on the crate is really fat and bluesy, and I like high gain sounds so thats why I use the pedal.
If I get the amp I probably wont need a new one EVER. Its big enough, loud enough, and sounds good enough to stick with for ever, It will probably be either a mesa 3-channel dual rectifier head, or a mesa mark IV head.
The drumset I am looking at is a Tama rockstar fusion, and I will get a tama iron cobra double bass and Remo ebony pinstripe heads, (Not sure what cymbal pack or throne yet).
The drums will cost about $1500, the amp on the other hand will probably cost around $800-$1200. So the amp is on the cheaper side, while the drums are alot of fucking money. |

Well, if I get a drumset I KNOW I use the fuck out of it. When playing guitar for hours a day gets boring a drumset sounds like the cure.
The reason the drumset is so much is because Im not getting a cheap beginners set, its a mid-level set thats good enough to do anything with. |

I don't even a own a prodution amp anymore I just make them to sound how I want. I don't even own any pedals because the distortion is catered to my taste. If I decide to go public with these things I am going to make 50, 20 and 2 watt versions. The dirty channel is based on the SLO 100 circuit, which mesa ripped off, and the clean is a Fender Tweed type. Anything over 50 watts is just ridiculuously loud. Even with a loud drummer I've never turned the 50 watt I made for my brother above 4 so the power tube distortion never gets to shine.
I own a tama iron cobra double and a DW delta II accelerator and I seem to play the tama more because the DW broke and left a bad taste in my mouth.
I would get the drums because they are a great way to let out angst. |

| I'm with russoloco. Anything over fifty watts is silly. You can't turn it up loud enough to get any gain out of it and the couple of hundred extra they charge you for it you could use to buy a real nice sounding 50 watt head. |

Well clint, Scott and Derek both play with Mesa 100watt dual rectifiers right? I saw Scott has a rackmount one.
Are those wicked loud during practice?
Here is the deal, Im looking at 2 amps:
1. Mesa mark IV, 85 watt with half power switch (I think it cuts it to 25watts or something).
2.Mesa Dual recto 3-channel 100 watts.
I want it to be loud enough to play a medium size to larger size gigs.(no bedroom shows or anything) |

russoloco,
Thats awesome that you building amps, you should check this website out, its a message bored and you can talk about amps and stuff to.
The Soldano SLO is an awesome amp, Peavey ripped off the tone for the 5150, but the SLO has a better clean. But the SLO's cost a bunch, too much for me. How much do you sell your amps for? I wouldnt mind having a SLO style distortion and a fender twin clean haha, can that be done?
Im looking closest at the Mesa mark IV, it has many sounds and the knobs to prove it. |

| Yeah, they both play em and I personally don't like either of their sounds. Eric does play out of a little fender and I prefer that to the boogies. They're loud but.......If I was you I'd go for the Mark IV. You'll get alot more gain(that boogie sound) at a lower vol. Trust me 85 watts is plenty loud. If you had a 50 watt boogie (like I do. DC-5) or a Marshall you'd never really turn it up. After 2 or 3 the amp does not get any louder it just distorts way more and usually you get a sound that's pretty hairy. not in the good way either. But, then again I play bass so.......it's just my 2cents. |

Neongreen, The fender twin clean can be done since all my amps have totally separate channels, unlike soldano boogie. But there are about a million different schems for the fender twin. DO you have a model you prefer? email me at [email protected] for prices and other info. Just to let you know it would be under $1000 dollars for me to build it. |

| If your going to get a tama set spend the extra 200 hundred for the tama rockstar customs they will last a lot longer. As far as mesas they always need repair and the warranty repair guys are normally out surfing! You should check out the Peavey Triple XXX head. Its really powerful and has two different rad distortion channels! Theres my two cents! |

| The only reason you'd want a head with more than fifty watts is if you plan on setting up a full stack or more. I'm pretty sure you don't need that unless you're Eddie Van Halen. Though it's nice to know that you have that much power and you're not driving your amp to the max just to get it as loud as you want it. Hey Clint. Is that true? That it's better not to drive a 50 watt amp too much or it might heat up pretty bad and maybe be stressfull to it ot am I filling this guys head full of bullshit. It seems logical to me, but so doesn't drinking your own piss if I was Kevin Costner on waterworld. Merry fucking christmas by the way..... Drums are cool though. They're not as easy as they look though, so keep that in mind. Because if you spend a bunch of money on the drums and lose interest you'l be kicking yourself in the ass for not buying the amp. Just go with what you think you'll be more apt to use... |

To rap this up......
I've decided to get the new amp, a Mesa mark IV head, 85watts. Same amp that eric from NOFX used alot ha, I like his sound not bad.
And Ty, it doesnt hurt amps to play them loud, tube amps are bestwhenthey are cranked, because the tubes get saturated with all kinds of rock and roll juice and they shoot loads of distortion fun.
Man, it will be great having an amp that actually sounds like I want it. |

I just used a voice recorder and played with a good dstortion effect and it sounds like a bad produced actual album, i mean i could write 4 lupus albums in an afternoon. drums are boring, it makes too much noise and once you stop progressing you're bored and you regress and you don't want to progress again. |
