it's a single's world and a common "get-to-know-you" question is "what kind of music do you like?"
this is the question i hate to answer
it isn't that i don't have anything to say about music
it isn't that i'm embarrassed of my tastes
it's just that i have no idea exactly WHAT KIND OF MUSIC it IS that i like
words like punk/ska/alternative/progressive/newage/bladdy bladdy blah are not words that frequent my vocabulary
and i've witnessed discussions/arguements trying to jam a band into a fitting genre
i say TA HELL WITH YOU AND YOUR CUBBY HOLES!!
music is music
the only place i see fit for the kindgom, order, pylum, genus, and species placement of a particular artsist/band is on those damn little 'lick-me' stickers that columbia house sends in the mail
but wouldn't you agree that some of the most brilliant of artists explore many kinds of influences whilst creating something to tickle your ears
i think of outback steakhouse
it's all fuckin american food
they just slap an aussie twist to the menu names and give you a big knife and all of the sudden you feel like a boomarang-weilding crocodile wrestler and walk out of there calling your chick a sheila
at least with tex-mex food they ADMIT that it's a couple different food styles gettin it on in a skillet
people with a diverse ethnic background pick their favorite one to preach about during the month designated to slut out their culture
so why is it like this for music
i personally try to treat each band i enjoy individually and it's even TOO broad THEN at times as artists/bands change with the times as well as albums *cough*ween*cough*whatthehellcouldisayTHEYare??
my brain hurts when my friend eric talks about crust/grindcore/spacerock/emo
it hurts i say
how are we supposed to keep up
i say leave the dewey decimal system to the sexually frustrated librarians

see that's what i end up doing too
when i describe music to someone who's never heard of he/she/it/them i tend to compare to other musicians/etc that sound similar
"the beginning of this song sounds like this band when they do this and that and then some and the vocals sound like this artist and this artist had a baby and it chainsmoked. . . "
