Abstract: The University of the Sunshine Coast in Australian struck a deal last month with Steve Irwin, director of the Australia Zoo but better known to Americans as the host of "The Crocodile Hunter" that allows the university to use Irwin's name and image free of charge to publicize the university to American students, especially those wishing to participate in study-abroad programs about exotic wildlife and animal preservation in Australia. How does a university in the hinterlands of Australia attract American students? Add a crocodile hunter to its marketing strategy, of course.
The University of the Sunshine Coast struck a deal last month with Steve Irwin, director of the Australia Zoo but better known to Americans as the host of The Crocodile Hunter, which airs in the United States on the Animal Planet channel.
The agreement allows the university, located in Maroochydore, an hour north of Brisbane, to use Mr. Irwin's name and image free of charge to publicize the university to American students, especially those wishing to participate in study-abroad programs about exotic wildlife and animalpreservation in Australia. The university enrolls 3,500 students, nearly a third from other countries, including about 100 Americans.
The university has already put images of Mr. Irwin and his beloved crocs on brochures sent out to hundreds of prospective students, as well as on posters and on large cardboard cutouts to be used by recruiters. One brochure shows Mr. Irwin wrestling a crocodile and declares, "What a beaut base the Sunshine Coast is for you to plan your future from."
Jane Batzloff, an international recruiter at the university, describes Mr. Irwin as "a typical down-to-earth Aussie bloke" whose personal warmth and fame made him an obvious choice. Judging from the e-mail she has received, American students' interest in the university is on the rise since Mr. Irwin signed on.
"His profile," she says, "is helping our profile, no question." |
